Student Support Counselor

Dear Parent, Guardian, or Caretaker,

We are beginning the Being My Best Self Unit of Harmony SEL, our social and emotional learning program. In this unit, students will learn to recognize and name emotions and to understand that emotions, thoughts, and actions are connected. Students will also learn how to use calming strategies when they have strong emotions and learn about the importance of persistence and effort in reaching their goals.

Here are some activities are designed to fit into your daily routine and provide ways to further connect with your child:

● Talk about emotions with your child: Act out together what it looks, feels, and sounds like when they experience one emotion versus another. Talk about what they can look for to tell how other people feel. Practice looking for clues to people’s feelings by having your child guess what emotion you are acting out.

● Talk with your child about different situations:  talk about when they may get angry, sad, happy, afraid, excited, calm, shy, and other emotions you can think of.

o Encourage your child to explain why they may feel the way they feel: Have your child describe the action they usually take in response to the emotion. Explain that all emotions are valid but talk about how the way we act in response to those emotions can be helpful or unhelpful. Use examples from your lives.

● Notice and label when your child recognizes their emotions, the strength of their emotions, and how those emotions influence their thoughts and actions: For example, “You are feeling ____? Thank you for telling me.” “You thought/did____ because you were feeling _____? Let’s talk about it.” Talk with your child about “self-talk” or our voice we have in our head. Have them think about whether the voice gives helpful or unhelpful messages.

  • Go over the two steps to get calm when we have very strong emotions in response to situations.

  • Stop: Notice—What is happening in my body? What are my emotions? How strong are they?

  • Cool Off: Get calm—What calming strategy should I use to bring my reaction down?

Reminder about Early Dismissal

Pedestrian Gate Entry for Walkers:

We have received some feedback/requests regarding the pedestrian gate being open at an earlier time to parents of Student Walkers. Unfortunately, for the safety and security of our students, staff, and access to the building, the pedestrian gate will not open until 6:55 am for Arrival and 2:55 pm for Dismissal. Additionally, we have had to fix the gate and request that you do not pull on the gate door in attempts of accessing and entering. Finally, we ask that once the door is unlocked and accessible to Student Walker parents to begin forming a line, we ask that you do not prop the gate open with any objects as parents should have access to enter and pick up their student at dismissal time.

Student Laptop Chargers:

During the first and second weeks of school all students were provided with a laptop device and a charger. It is now week 4 of the school year and we have reports that some students have lost their laptop chargers. We ask that the chargers are looked for at home prior to communicating with your child's teacher that your student has lost their laptop charger. Once we receive that communication, the teacher will take a look in the classroom spaces used by the student and if the charger is not located, families will receive a letter from the Operations team regarding the lost charger. Students will be unable to receive a charger until the charger replacement fee is paid, the total cost for a replacement charger is $50.

Uniform Update:

We have received all uniforms for the school year and will begin distributing in classrooms this week! Your student will receive 2 shirts and 1 polo. If your student began with us after the first day of school and did not receive any shirts, they will receive all 5 uniform shirts.

Late Pick-Up:

As a reminder, Parents/Guardians are given a 30-minute grace period to pick up their student. All students should be picked up no later than 3:30 pm. Beginning Monday, September 11th, you will sign your child out this will help us to track all late student pick-ups so that we can follow up with individual families. If a concern arises with a family continually picking up their child late from school, the leadership team will address this with the family and YES Prep Public Schools may report to local authorities and/or Child Protective Services.

**If your student is picked up by their Secondary sibling after their 4:00 pm dismissal time, please email nfeops@yesprep.org with your elementary student's information so we can identify your student as part of the Secondary sibling pick-up group.
